Coming to Australia

WIP

Ray finished his middle school years in Zhaiqing in 1948. Shortly after this, he came to Australia to join his grandfather, Ah Young.

The trip from the village to Australia was in steerage

His original purpose to come to Australia was to continue education. He bagan some schooling in the form of English classes but he soon decided he would rather work at the market garden. His student visa was exchanged to become a replacement worker on the family market garden so Ah Young could retire.

The family leaves Hong Kong - 1941

Hong Kong fell to the Japanese Army on 25 Dec 1941. About 2 weeks after that event, Chu Moy and her extended family fled the city. Kam Wing Choy as the oldest male had responsibility for arrangements. The group also included:

The group left Hong Kong by overnight ferry to Zhongshan, then to Heshan, and on to the village at Gaoyao. The trip involved a ferry, a boat, bicycles, sedan chairs and walking. Dad recalls it took 4 or 5 days.
