Ray finished his middle school years in Zhaiqing in 1948. Shortly after this, he came to Australia to join his grandfather, Ah Young.
The trip from the village to Australia was in steerage
His original purpose to come to Australia was to continue education. He bagan some schooling in the form of English classes but he soon decided he would rather work at the market garden. His student visa was exchanged to become a replacement worker on the family market garden so Ah Young could retire.

Recollection: Family migrated south from Fuking province in 1273. Came to Gouyo to set up home.
16th generation in the family book of Shui Sin. (1383-1464) Born in the Sung dynasty in Fukien province(Hokkein province)
Choy name goes back to Chou dynasty. Came from south of the river province.
Family moved to Char Gong from Lai Char in 1899 . Village established by Choy and So families.
Rent from some of the rice fields was dedicated to cemetery funds and regular feast for the descendants.

The family leaves Hong Kong - 1941
Hong Kong fell to the Japanese Army on 25 Dec 1941. About 2 weeks after that event, Chu Moy … and her extended family fled the city. Kam Wing Choy as the oldest male had responsibility for arrangements. The group also included:
The group left Hong Kong by overnight ferry to Zhongshan, then to Heshan, and on to the village at Gaoyao. The trip involved a ferry, a boat, bicycles, sedan chairs and walking. Dad recalls it took 4 or 5 days.
